About Music Academy Asheville

Asheville Musician and performer Anne Coombs realized a need for music-education in the community. In 1996 she founded, operated, and owned The Asheville Music School on Charlotte Street. In 2001 she gave up ownership along with over 300 participating students but continued to manage operations and teach 50 of her personal guitar students.

In 2006 she began holding guitar jam camps while students were on summer school break. In 2008 her guitar jam camps developed into what is now The Rock Academy, a year-round performance studies program. In 2009, Anne opened Asheville Music School West, which she later rebranded as Music Academy Asheville. In 2011 Anne’s dream to ensure that all children would have access to a music education became the inspiration for Give to the Music, a 501©3 non-profit organization that provides tuition for private music lessons, performance classes and tutoring, as well as instruments and musical equipment for children in need of financial assistance.

In 2017 Anne retired and Steve and Dena Clark, who have been involved with The Rock Academy since its inception, became the owners of the Academy. Steve provides his more than 40 years of financial management experience and Dena, who has a background in commercial insurance, has been on the Give to the Music Board of Directors since its inception. The strengths that these partners bring to the business will insure that the school and its programs continue to grow and serve the community well into the future.
