Susie Wolter Shaw began teaching piano while she was a graduate student in piano performance at the University of Georgia. She graduated from UGA, receiving the Bachelor of Music degree in 1974, cum laude, and the Master of Fine Arts in 1976. While at UGA, she studied piano with Carlos Kussrow-Corma and Jean Reti-Forbes, and organ with Dr. Egbert Ennulat. She accompanied several student instrumentalists and played harpsicord with the Student Baroque Ensemble.
An Asheville native, Susie returned to Asheville to teach private piano lessons, and has been active in church music and accompanying. She has been organist at Grace Baptist Church since 1985, where she assists with children's choirs and the handbell choir, and sings with the worship team. She has also served as organist at Reed Memorial Baptist Church and at Skyland United Methodist Church. She has been a staff accompanist for Warren Wilson College, and was accompanist for Asheville Chorale Society from 1984 to 1990.
After taking her two children to Kindermusik classes, Susie trained as a Kindermusik Educator in 1999, and taught Kindermusik classes for about 3 years.
Susie is a member of the Asheville Area Piano Forum. She enjoys teaching piano to students of all ages, giving a good foundation of music reading, technique and theory, so the student can apply that to whatever style interests him or her.
Susie lives in West Asheville with her husband, Chris. Their two children are now in college.
