When I first enrolled my son in music summer camp, I wasn’t sure if he’d love or hate it, but off to drum summer camp he went nevertheless. After all I’d grown up on a farm, where we’d worked 365 days a year, so I’d never been to summer camp. Turns out it was one of the best decisions I ever made for my son. Not only did he get to experience a concentrated music camp where his drumming ability increased, but he made great friends and developed a deeper, more mature respect and understanding for music and his instructors. Music Academy – Asheville’s summer camp was wonderful for my son.
Summer music camp helped him become more confident. Camp helps children build self-esteem because it changes the dynamics of learning from traditional school settings to much more interactive, diverse settings. Learning to drum better was just the beginning. He became more musically resilient by helping him conquer a few personal fears concerning his ability. In essence, it was productive fun!
Camp gave him a break from technology. Well, perhaps I wanted him to have a break from gaming, cell phones and the internet more than he did, but summer camp offered him a better way to tap into his creativity. He gained lifelong skills, because music is something he’ll always carry in his soul.
Social skills 101 were part of music summer camp. There’s more to music camp than hanging out with other kids for a few hours every day. The kids gelled into a close-knit group as they learned to play together as a real band, knowing that they weren’t there just for fun, but had to master their songs by the big performance at the end of the week. They had work to do, but had a blast working together. That’s more than a lot of us adults have during our work week.
